Section guide

Inside the CELPIP Reading section

Reading is the second section on CELPIP General and comes right after Listening. You work through four parts with 38 multiple choice questions in total. Every part opens with something to read — an email, a diagram, an informational passage or a news article — and the on-screen timer runs across the whole section.

The passages sit in everyday Canadian contexts: workplace emails, community notices, general interest articles and opinion pieces. You are not tested on background knowledge — every answer is supported by the text, which is why regular practice with realistic passages is the fastest way to raise your level.

11 questions

Part 1

Reading Correspondence

A short email or letter followed by a reply. You answer questions on the message itself, then complete the reply by choosing the missing words.

8 questions

Part 2

Reading to Apply a Diagram

A visual — a chart, map or infographic — paired with a short email. You use the diagram to answer questions and to fill in the reply.

9 questions

Part 3

Reading for Information

A longer informational passage broken into paragraphs. You match statements to the paragraph that best supports them.

10 questions

Part 4

Reading for Viewpoints

A news style article followed by a reader comment. Questions test the writer's viewpoint, the commenter's stance and the details of both.

Timing

The official section takes 55 to 60 minutes including instructions, and each full-length mock here runs on the same countdown timer.

Scoring

All 38 questions carry equal weight. Your raw score converts to a CELPIP level, with Level 12 the highest possible result.

CELPIP General only

The Reading section is part of CELPIP General. CELPIP General LS covers Listening and Speaking, so LS candidates skip Reading entirely.

Answer explanations

Every mock finishes on a results page with the correct answer, your response and a short explanation for each question you attempted.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything test takers usually ask about the CELPIP Reading section and how these practice tests work.

Reading is part of CELPIP General only. CELPIP General LS covers Listening and Speaking, so if you are taking the LS version you do not sit the Reading section. Every test on this page targets the CELPIP General Reading format.

There are four parts with 38 questions in total. Part 1 (Correspondence) has 11 questions, Part 2 (Diagram) has 8, Part 3 (Information) has 9 and Part 4 (Viewpoints) has 10. Every question is multiple choice.

You get 55 to 60 minutes in the official exam including instructions. Our mocks run about the same, and the on-screen timer counts down the same way so you can rehearse pacing under real conditions.

Every question carries equal weight. Your raw score out of 38 converts to a CELPIP level, with Level 12 being the highest. When you finish a mock here, you see your score right away along with the full answer key and short explanations.

Yes. Passages, diagrams and viewpoint exchanges are written to CELPIP length, tone and question style. The set ramps up gradually — Tests 1 to 35 are Easy, Tests 36 to 80 are Medium and Tests 81 to 100 are Hard — so you can build up steadily.

Test 1 is free, so start there to get a feel for the format. Once you are comfortable, work through the Easy band in order before moving into the Medium and Hard tests closer to your exam date.

Yes, within a single part you can navigate between questions and revise answers until you submit that part. Once you move to the next part you cannot return, so budget your time before advancing — the mocks here enforce the same rule.

Yes. Every mock test finishes on a results page with the correct answer for each question, your response and a short explanation so you understand not just the score but the reasoning behind each answer.
