The task
What is CELPIP Reading Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints?
An article on a debated issue quoting several people with different positions: residents on a proposed bike lane, teachers and parents on homework, employees on a four-day week. You answer questions about who thinks what, then complete a reader's comment on the article so that it argues one consistent position.
How a practice set runs
- Open the set; the timer starts and the article appears on the left.
- Answer five drop-down questions about the views in the article and who holds them.
- Read the reader comment and complete its five blanks so the comment is coherent and consistent with the article.
- Submit to see your score and an explanation for every answer.
What you answer
Ten drop-down answers: five questions plus five blanks in the comment. The questions test attribution and inference (which person would agree with a statement, what a quoted remark implies); the comment blanks test whether you can follow an argument and keep it consistent.
Example
Sample question: Which person believes the change should be delayed? (choose: the councillor / the shop owner / the cyclist / the planner). Sample comment blank: 'Like the shop owner, I think the plan ... (ignores deliveries / helps commuters / should start sooner).'
Skills and pitfalls
What CELPIP Reading Part 4 tests
Part 4 checks whether you can separate the viewpoints in a longer article: who thinks what, why, and where they disagree.
The comment-completion half tests whether you can follow a new reader's argument and keep it consistent with the article. It is the longest and most demanding part of the Reading test.
How practicing these sets helps

Map the people before the questions
As you read, jot each name with a two-word summary of their position. Most Part 4 questions are answered by that map.
Notice how views are introduced
Verbs such as argues, concedes, warns or doubts tell you the strength and direction of an opinion. They are often what a question is really about.
Read the comment as one argument
Before filling any blank, read the entire comment. Its blanks must agree with each other as well as with the article.
Separate the writer from the people quoted
An article can present a view without endorsing it. When a question asks about the writer, look for sentences the writer states directly.
Give Part 4 the time it needs
In these sets you have 12 minutes. In a full test, keep enough time for this part; it has the most questions and the longest text.

Read the whole comment first, decide what position it takes, then choose each option so the finished comment is consistent with itself and with the article.
