CELPIP General vs LS: Which Test Do You Need?

IRCC names the accepted version on each program page, and the rule is consistent: anything that checks four skills needs General. The table lists the situations people search for, with the official rule behind each one. If your application is not here, check whether it asks for four skills or two.

What CELPIP General LS actually is

LS stands for Listening and Speaking. It is the CELPIP General test with the Reading and Writing components removed, nothing more. The Listening section has the same six parts (Problem Solving, Daily Life Conversation, Listening for Information, News Item, Discussion, Viewpoints), the same 38 scored questions and the same 46 to 55 minutes. The Speaking section has the same eight tasks in the same 15 minutes, recorded on the computer. You get the same 1 to 12 level for each skill.

So the honest answer to "is CELPIP LS easier" is no. The audio still plays once, the same timers run and the same raters score your speaking. What LS changes is the length of the sitting and the price. Our CELPIP Listening tips and CELPIP Speaking test guide apply to both versions.

Fees and what you actually pay

As of September 2026, celpip.ca's booking pages show CELPIP General at $299 plus tax and CELPIP General LS at $199 plus tax in Canada. Tax depends on your province, so an Ontario sitting comes to about $338 and $225 with HST. Outside Canada the price varies by country and celpip.ca does not publish a table. If you see $280, $290 or $195 elsewhere, that is the previous pricing: the General fee moved from $280 to $290 for sittings on or after October 1, 2024 and later to $299, and a few older celpip.ca pages still display the old numbers.

• Cancelling: a 50 percent refund if CELPIP receives the request at least 7 calendar days before the sitting, nothing after that.
• Rescheduling: only to another sitting of the same test type, at least 7 days out. The first transfer is free, later ones cost $50 plus tax.
• Retakes: you can register for only one sitting in any 5 calendar days.
• Late arrival: check-in closes 15 minutes before the start. Arrive 45 minutes early, because latecomers are turned away with no refund or transfer.

Scores, results and validity

Both tests report a CELPIP level from 1 to 12 for each component, and levels 4 to 12 align one to one with CLB 4 to 12 (IRCC groups 10 to 12 as CLB 10). Results appear in your CELPIP account within 2 to 4 business days as a PDF report; paper reports have been discontinued. Validity is where the two sources disagree. celpip.ca says scores are valid for five years and keeps them in your account that long. IRCC's rule for Express Entry and the PGWP is that results must be under two years old when you submit. For citizenship, IRCC accepts results you already submitted for a previous immigration application even if they have expired. The IRCC window is the one that decides your application.

CELPIP LS score for citizenship

If you are 18 to 54, you must prove CLB 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking. On CELPIP General or General LS that is level 4 or higher in both skills; for tests taken on or before March 31, 2014 the old scale applies (2H or higher). Applicants under 18 or 55 and over do not need language proof. IRCC also accepts IELTS General Training (Listening 4.5, Speaking 4.0), PTE Core (Listening 28, Speaking 42) and the French tests at B1; the English options are compared in CELPIP vs IELTS and CELPIP vs PTE Core.

CELPIP General score for a PGWP

For PGWP applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, university graduates need CLB 7 and college or polytechnic graduates need CLB 5, in all four skills, from a test taken within the last two years. IRCC's PGWP score tables list CELPIP General only, so an LS result cannot be used even for the Listening and Speaking part. Since May 2026 the online application has a "Proof of Language Proficiency" upload field; it sits under optional documents but is required for most applicants.

Can I switch from CELPIP LS to General after booking?

Not by rescheduling. CELPIP's transfer policy only allows a move to another sitting of the same test type, so an LS booking can only become another LS booking. To change versions you cancel (50 percent refund if you are 7 or more days out) and register for General as a new booking. There is also no way to sit Reading and Writing later and combine them with an existing LS result: IRCC needs all four skills on one General report.

Common booking mistakes with CELPIP General vs LS

1. 1Booking LS for Express Entry, a PNP or another PR program. Only General is accepted, and the cheaper test becomes the more expensive one once you rebook.
2. 2Booking LS for a PGWP. The permit needs CLB 7 or CLB 5 in all four skills, and IRCC's tables do not list LS.
3. 3Choosing LS on price when a licence or a later PR application will need four skills. A General result covers citizenship too, so it is the safer buy when your plans are not fixed.
4. 4Assuming LS is an easier Listening or Speaking test. The sections are identical; only Reading and Writing are missing.
5. 5Sitting General long before you will apply. IRCC needs the result under two years old at profile and at application, whatever celpip.ca says about five-year validity.
6. 6Picking the wrong CELPIP label in the IRCC online form. IRCC splits CELPIP-G results by test date (on or before March 31, 2014 versus April 1, 2014 or later), which is where the confusing "CELPIP-General 2014" label comes from. Anyone tested after that date picks the current CELPIP-G option.
