Reading Test 34 · Part 3 (Beeswax Candle Making)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Honey bees produce wax scales and shape them into the comb that stores food and supports developing young. Beekeepers recover usable wax from removed caps, old comb, and pieces separated during hive management. Heating melts the wax so strainers can remove debris before the material is cooled into clean blocks. Colour and aroma vary with pollen, propolis, age, and filtering rather than indicating one fixed level of quality. Together, these details place production and burning of beeswax candles within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.

B. A candle may be poured in a mould, dipped repeatedly, rolled from patterned sheets, or built inside a container. The wick must suit the candle's diameter because it controls how much melted fuel reaches the flame. A wick that is too small can create a narrow tunnel, while an oversized one may burn rapidly and smoke. Keeping the wick centred also helps the melt pool form evenly instead of leaving a thick wall on one side. This combination helps explain why forming candles around a wick cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.

C. Flame heat first melts nearby beeswax into a shallow pool around the wick. Capillary action draws the liquid upward through tiny spaces among the wick's fibres. Near the flame, wax vaporizes and reacts with oxygen, releasing the heat that melts additional fuel below. The visible wick mainly transports fuel; most of the sustained flame comes from burning wax vapour rather than solid wax. For production and burning of beeswax candles, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

D. Beeswax candles tend to be firm and can burn with a mild natural scent when properly made. Drafts disturb the flame, encourage uneven melting, and may carry soot toward nearby surfaces. Trimming a long charred wick can reduce smoking, but cutting it too short makes relighting difficult. Clean leftover wax can be remelted into another candle, although accumulated dirt should be removed before reuse. Viewed together, details about performance, care, and reuse of wax connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Capillary action carries liquid wax upward through the wick fibres.

  2. - 2. Moving air can make a candle burn unevenly and produce soot.

  3. - 3. Candle width helps determine the appropriate size of its wick.

  4. - 4. Beekeeping activities provide wax from comb and hive cappings for candle production.

  5. - 5. Wax vapour, rather than the solid candle body, supplies most fuel to the flame.

  6. - 6. Filtering melted wax removes unwanted pieces before clean blocks are formed.

  7. - 7. The natural colour of a beeswax candle predicts its exact burning time.

  8. - 8. An incorrectly sized or off-centre wick can cause uneven burning.

  9. - 9. Recovered wax may be remelted if contamination is removed first.
