Reading Test 46 · Part 3 (Caring for Historic Textiles)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Historic clothing, carpets, flags, and woven furnishings often survive with fibres already weakened by age and use. The objects may look stable while individual threads are brittle enough to break under their own weight. Dyes can fade permanently, and stains or old repairs may react differently from the surrounding cloth. Textile conservation therefore emphasizes preventing new damage instead of making an old object appear newly manufactured. Within preventive conservation of historic textiles, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.

B. A garment displayed upright receives hidden support from a padded form shaped to spread its weight. Flat textiles rest on covered boards or sloping mounts rather than hanging from a few stressed points. Clean hands or gloves prevent skin oils from entering fibres during examination and installation. Staff move large pieces on rigid supports so folds do not shift and tear when the object is lifted. Observations of supportive display and careful handling show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.

C. Visible and ultraviolet light can weaken fibres and alter colour, so museums limit brightness and exposure time. Enclosed cases reduce dust, handling, and sudden changes in the air surrounding a textile. Stable moderate humidity prevents repeated swelling and contraction that can loosen fibres or encourage mould. Air filters and careful housekeeping remove particles that could abrade surfaces or attract damaging insects. Understanding preventive conservation of historic textiles therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.

D. Rolled storage can protect large flat pieces when wide tubes and smooth interleaving prevent sharp creases. Small supports keep folded objects from developing pressure along one narrow line. Regular inspection detects insect activity, fading, loose threads, and changing stains before damage becomes extensive. When treatment is necessary, conservators test small areas because cleaning may remove dyes or alter historic finishes. For storage, monitoring, and limited treatment, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Museums limit both the intensity and duration of light reaching sensitive fabrics.

  2. - 2. Wide storage rolls help large textiles avoid tight damaging creases.

  3. - 3. Padded forms distribute the weight of garments placed on upright display.

  4. - 4. An old textile may be structurally weak even when it appears stable.

  5. - 5. Controlled humidity reduces repeated dimensional changes and mould risk.

  6. - 6. Conservators seek to prevent further deterioration rather than make fabric look new.

  7. - 7. One historic textile is displayed for exactly six months in every decade.

  8. - 8. Large textiles are carried on rigid supports to avoid damaging shifts and folds.

  9. - 9. Cleaning methods are tested because they can affect dyes and historic surface treatments.
