Read the following passage.
A. Ceramic tile begins with clay and mineral ingredients selected for colour, firing temperature, strength, and water absorption. Raw material is crushed and blended so large particles or uneven patches do not weaken the finished body. Water makes the mixture formable, but too much moisture increases shrinkage and slows later drying. Manufacturers therefore control composition before the clay reaches presses, rollers, or extrusion equipment. For manufacture and performance of ceramic tiles, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.
B. A press can compact powdered clay in a mould, while extrusion pushes a softer mixture through a shaped opening. Fresh pieces contain moisture and remain vulnerable to bending, cracking, or damage at their edges. Slow, even drying removes much of the water before firing and reduces unequal shrinkage within each tile. An initial kiln cycle hardens the body enough for handling when production uses a separate glazing stage. Viewed together, details about shaping, drying, and initial firing connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.
C. Glaze is a thin mineral coating that melts into a glasslike surface during firing. It can add colour, decoration, stain resistance, and lower absorption without changing the entire clay body. Kiln temperature must be high enough to bond materials but controlled so tiles do not warp or fuse together. Gradual heating and cooling limit thermal stress while chemical and physical changes become permanent. Within manufacture and performance of ceramic tiles, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.
D. Installed tiles resist wear and moisture when the product, adhesive, and grout suit the intended location. A rigid base prevents movement that could crack a strong tile despite its durable fired surface. Broken ceramic is difficult to remelt like glass, but clean fragments may be crushed for aggregate or new mixtures. Long service life and replaceable individual pieces can reduce how often an entire surface needs reconstruction. Observations of installation, durability, and recycling challenges show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. A melted glaze can provide decoration and resistance to staining.
- 2. Blue glaze creates a harder ceramic tile than every other glaze colour.
- 3. Tile manufacturers choose clay ingredients according to desired strength, colour, and water absorption.
- 4. A stable supporting base helps keep installed tiles from cracking.
- 5. Even drying before firing reduces the risk that different parts of a tile will shrink unequally.
- 6. Excess moisture can increase drying time and shrinkage in a clay mixture.
- 7. Controlled kiln heating prevents tiles from deforming or sticking together.
- 8. Some production methods fire the body once before adding its glaze.
- 9. Clean broken tiles may be crushed for use as aggregate instead of remelted.
