Reading Test 6 · Part 3 (Coastal Kelp Forests)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Kelp forests develop in cool, nutrient-rich coastal water where sunlight reaches a firm rocky bottom. Kelp resembles a plant, but it is a large brown alga without true roots, stems, or leaves. A holdfast grips rock without drawing nutrients from it, allowing the organism to remain anchored in moving water. Extensive forests occur only where light, temperature, nutrients, and grazing pressure stay within suitable ranges. Within structure and seasonal change in kelp forests, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.

B. Flexible stalk-like structures lift broad blades upward from the holdfast and bend as waves pass overhead. Many species contain gas-filled floats that raise their blades toward brighter water near the surface. Under favourable conditions, new blade tissue can grow quickly and replace material damaged by waves or feeding animals. Growth usually begins near the base of a blade, so worn ends do not prevent the remaining section from lengthening. Observations of kelp anatomy and rapid growth show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.

C. The upper canopy reduces light and wave energy for organisms living below its floating blades. Fish may shelter among the stalks, while snails, crabs, and other small animals occupy the holdfast's spaces. Different heights within the forest create several habitats instead of one uniform underwater environment. Detached kelp can also carry food and organic material to beaches or deeper communities beyond the living forest. Understanding structure and seasonal change in kelp forests therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.

D. Winter storms may remove large canopy sections, opening bright gaps above the seafloor for a time. Young kelp can take advantage of the increased light when surviving holdfasts or spores begin new growth. Recovery may be limited if grazing animals consume new plants faster than the canopy can return. Because conditions vary from place to place, nearby kelp forests can follow different seasonal patterns after the same storm. For seasonal disturbance and recovery, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Gas-filled structures lift the blades of many kelp species toward stronger light.

  2. - 2. The floating canopy reduces both light and wave force in the water below.

  3. - 3. Powerful winter weather can temporarily create openings in the kelp canopy.

  4. - 4. A single country contains more kelp forest than all other countries combined.

  5. - 5. Kelp forests require illuminated coastal water and a solid surface for attachment.

  6. - 6. Heavy grazing may prevent young kelp from restoring a damaged forest.

  7. - 7. A kelp holdfast secures the alga to rock but does not absorb nutrients like a true root.

  8. - 8. Several vertical levels in a kelp forest provide different living spaces for marine organisms.

  9. - 9. New growth near a blade's base allows kelp to lengthen despite damage at the tip.
