Reading Test 43 · Part 3 (Funicular Railways on Hillsides)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. A steep hillside can make an ordinary adhesion railway impractical because steel wheels have limited grip on steel rails. Roads may require long curves where direct travel between lower and upper districts would be much shorter. A funicular uses a cable to control cars that follow rails along the slope. Many systems connect two cars so one descends while the other climbs, partly balancing their weights. This combination helps explain why the transport challenge posed by steep slopes cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.

B. A powered winding mechanism moves the cable over large wheels at the upper station or in a nearby machine room. The descending car helps offset the energy needed to raise the ascending one, although passengers and friction create an imperfect balance. Strong attachments connect each car to the cable, while rollers guide it along the route. The machinery must control speed in both directions rather than merely pull a free vehicle uphill. For operation and design of funicular railways, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

C. Two separate tracks may run side by side, or a single track may divide briefly at a passing section. Special wheel arrangements guide paired cars through the correct branch without requiring an operator to steer. Service brakes stop the normal movement, and independent safety brakes can grip the rail if speed becomes excessive. Level or stepped car floors keep passengers stable according to whether stations and vehicles remain horizontal on the slope. Viewed together, details about track layouts, braking, and stations connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.

D. Funiculars can move many people efficiently where demand is concentrated along one short, steep corridor. They are less flexible than buses because the fixed guideway and cable define the entire route. Inspections cover rails, cable wear, brakes, doors, control systems, and the stability of the hillside. Modern examples serve city streets, scenic viewpoints, and transit connections while retaining the counterbalanced operating principle. Within operation and design of funicular railways, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. A single-track funicular may include a short section where its two cars pass.

  2. - 2. A descending car offsets part of the energy needed to lift the other car.

  3. - 3. A funicular can follow a direct steep route that would force a road into long curves.

  4. - 4. Funiculars work well where many passengers share one short hillside corridor.

  5. - 5. Independent emergency brakes can grip the rail if a car moves too fast.

  6. - 6. The world's highest funicular is located in Switzerland.

  7. - 7. Routine inspection includes the cable, braking equipment, doors, and slope stability.

  8. - 8. The winding equipment must regulate speed during both ascent and descent.

  9. - 9. Rails guide the cars while a cable controls their motion on the slope.
