Read the following passage.
A. Linen begins with flax, a slender annual plant whose strongest useful fibres run through the outer part of its stem. Growers seeking long textile fibres encourage straight, closely spaced stems rather than heavily branching plants. Plants may be pulled with their roots instead of cut so the full stem length remains available. Timing matters because immature stems yield weak fibre while overripe stems can become coarse and difficult to process. For flax cultivation and valuable stem fibres, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.
B. After seeds and leaves are removed, moisture and microorganisms help loosen the bonds around the fibre bundles. This controlled breakdown, called retting, can occur in water, on damp fields, or under managed industrial conditions. Insufficient retting leaves woody material attached, whereas excessive retting can weaken the desired fibres. Dried stems are then broken and scraped so brittle inner pieces fall away from the flexible outer strands. Together, these details place production of linen from flax plants within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.
C. Combing aligns long fibres and separates them from shorter tow that can still serve in coarser products. Spinners twist overlapping fibres into continuous yarn, balancing strength with the desired smoothness and thickness. Because flax fibres have little natural stretch, even control is important when yarn is wound and woven. Weavers interlace the yarn into cloth that may later be washed, bleached, dyed, or softened for its intended use. This combination helps explain why combing, spinning, and weaving cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.
D. Linen absorbs moisture readily and often feels cool because it releases dampness and conducts heat efficiently. The fibre is strong but repeated sharp folding can eventually break threads along the same crease. Modern processing can shorten preparation time, while traditional methods may preserve more variation in texture. Choices made during retting, combing, spinning, and finishing all influence the appearance and durability of the final cloth. For production of linen from flax plants, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. Combing arranges long fibres and removes shorter material for separate use.
- 2. Closely grown flax produces straighter stems with long fibres suitable for linen.
- 3. The Westhaven coast produces flax officially ranked above all other linen fibre.
- 4. Retting uses moisture and biological activity to loosen fibre bundles from surrounding tissue.
- 5. Linen can feel cool because it absorbs and releases moisture effectively.
- 6. Limited elasticity makes careful handling important while flax yarn is wound and woven.
- 7. Pulling the entire plant preserves more fibre length than cutting the stem above the ground.
- 8. Every processing stage contributes to the texture and service life of finished linen.
- 9. Allowing retting to continue too long can damage the fibres being prepared.
