Reading Test 36 · Part 3 (Planted Roadside Drainage Channels)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. A bioswale is a shallow vegetated channel designed to carry stormwater slowly along a planned route. It commonly receives runoff from roads, parking areas, or paths through curb openings and sloped surfaces. Unlike a concrete gutter, the planted channel delays flow and brings water into contact with soil and roots. Its long shape is useful where runoff must travel beside streets or between developed areas. For operation and design of vegetated bioswales, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

B. A gentle lengthwise slope keeps water moving without allowing it to race fast enough to erode the channel. Check dams or level sections may interrupt steeper sites and spread water across a wider area. Prepared soil balances infiltration with enough stability to support vegetation during repeated flows. Plants must withstand road salt, sediment, drought, and occasional flooding according to local conditions. Viewed together, details about shape, slope, soil, and vegetation connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.

C. Stems and leaves create resistance that lowers water speed and encourages suspended particles to settle. Some water soaks into the ground, reducing the volume that reaches a downstream pipe immediately. Soil can hold certain pollutants while microbes and plant roots transform or absorb selected nutrients. When the ground is saturated, an underdrain or overflow keeps excess water moving toward a safe outlet. Within operation and design of vegetated bioswales, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.

D. Sediment accumulation near an inlet can divert flow and must be removed before it smothers vegetation. Eroded spots reveal excessive speed, while standing water may indicate blocked outlets or compacted soil. An ordinary roadside ditch mainly conveys water, but a bioswale is built to provide treatment and delay as well. Regular inspection preserves these functions and prevents the channel from becoming simply an unmanaged depression. Observations of maintenance and differences from ordinary ditches show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. A mild channel slope avoids the high speeds that could cause erosion.

  2. - 2. Vegetation slows runoff enough for some carried particles to fall out.

  3. - 3. A bioswale moves stormwater through a long planted channel rather than a hard gutter.

  4. - 4. The earliest bioswale was installed beside Bellhaven railway station.

  5. - 5. Sediment blocking an inlet can prevent water from following the intended route.

  6. - 6. Its linear form is useful for drainage routes beside roads and developed land.

  7. - 7. Plant choices must reflect exposure to salt, sediment, flooding, and dry periods.

  8. - 8. Treatment and temporary delay distinguish a bioswale from a basic drainage ditch.

  9. - 9. An overflow or underdrain provides an outlet when soil cannot absorb more water.
