Read the following passage.
A. Solid boards expand, shrink, and sometimes split differently along and across the direction of their grain. Plywood reduces this uneven behaviour by joining several thin sheets of wood into one panel. The grain direction usually turns across adjacent layers, allowing each sheet to restrain movement in its neighbours. An odd number of layers creates a balanced structure around the central sheet and gives similar faces on both sides. Understanding manufacture and structural properties of plywood therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.
B. Logs are softened with heat and moisture before a lathe peels a long continuous ribbon of veneer. Other veneers may be sliced when appearance and a particular grain figure matter more than production speed. Sheets are dried to a controlled moisture level so later shrinkage does not weaken the bond. Defects can be clipped out, and smaller sound pieces may be joined for internal layers that will not remain visible. For producing thin veneers from logs, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.
C. Adhesive is spread between veneers before the stack enters a press under heat and pressure. The press brings surfaces into close contact, cures the adhesive, and fixes the panel at a consistent thickness. Crossed grain distributes loads in more than one direction and reduces the tendency for a long split to travel. The finished sheet is trimmed, sanded, and inspected for gaps, surface flaws, or weak bonding. Together, these details place manufacture and structural properties of plywood within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.
D. Plywood grades differ according to face quality, internal construction, adhesive durability, and intended exposure. Structural panels, furniture cores, curved forms, and packaging therefore use products made to different requirements. Peeling veneer uses much of a log efficiently, while offcuts and damaged material can supply other wood products. Edges remain vulnerable to moisture when the selected adhesive or protective finish does not suit outdoor conditions. This combination helps explain why grades, efficient use, and moisture protection cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. Different plywood grades reflect surface appearance, bonding, construction, and expected exposure.
- 2. Heat and pressure cure adhesive while establishing an even panel thickness.
- 3. One tree species is preferred for the face of every grade of plywood.
- 4. Turning the grain between layers reduces plywood's tendency to move unevenly.
- 5. Heating and moistening a log makes it easier to peel into a continuous thin sheet.
- 6. A balanced panel commonly contains an odd number of wood veneers.
- 7. An unsuitable adhesive or finish can leave panel edges vulnerable outdoors.
- 8. Veneer moisture is controlled before assembly to protect the later adhesive bond.
- 9. Cross-laminated grain helps plywood carry forces in multiple directions.
