Reading Test 39 · Part 3 (Qanat Tunnels in Dry Regions)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Communities in dry regions developed qanats to bring groundwater from upland aquifers toward farms and settlements. An open canal across hot ground would lose substantial water through evaporation before reaching distant users. A qanat kept most of its route underground and relied on gravity rather than continuous pumping. Its water emerged at a lower elevation where channels could distribute it for drinking, gardens, or agriculture. Observations of the need to move groundwater with little evaporation show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.

B. Builders first located a reliable water-bearing layer and dug a deep mother well to reach it. They then excavated a gently descending tunnel from the outlet back toward the source. Vertical shafts at regular intervals removed spoil, admitted air, and provided access for workers. The slope had to be steep enough for flow but gentle enough to prevent destructive erosion inside the channel. Understanding construction and operation of qanat water systems therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.

C. Groundwater entered the upper section and moved through the tunnel without exposure to direct sunlight. At the outlet, the stream could fill a reservoir or divide into smaller channels serving different users. Schedules and measuring structures helped communities share a limited flow across fields and households. Because gravity supplied movement, operating energy remained low after the difficult construction work was complete. For gravity flow, outlets, and shared distribution, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

D. Silt, fallen material, and root growth could block a tunnel, requiring skilled workers to enter through access shafts. Collapsed ground and poor air made maintenance hazardous, especially in deep or neglected sections. Abandoned qanats may lower local water availability no further, but their surface shafts still require protection. Working systems shape settlement patterns because gardens and buildings cluster near dependable outlets and distribution routes. Together, these details place construction and operation of qanat water systems within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Vertical shafts allow excavated material to be removed and workers to reach the tunnel.

  2. - 2. Removing blockages from deep tunnels is specialized and potentially dangerous work.

  3. - 3. Water travels in darkness until it emerges at the qanat outlet.

  4. - 4. Keeping most of a qanat underground limits water loss through evaporation.

  5. - 5. A carefully chosen gentle slope balances reliable flow against internal erosion.

  6. - 6. Qanat builders were paid according to each metre of tunnel completed.

  7. - 7. Reliable outlets influence where cultivation and settlement develop.

  8. - 8. Communal schedules can divide a small continuous supply among several users.

  9. - 9. The system transports groundwater downhill without needing constant powered pumping.
