Reading Test 38 · Part 3 (Raising Boats with Canal Locks)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. A canal crossing uneven land cannot remain at one level without enormous excavation or high embankments. Sudden changes in water height would create currents and drops that ordinary boats could not navigate safely. A lock encloses a vessel in a chamber and changes the water level around it in a controlled way. Several locks may form a staircase where a route must climb or descend a substantial slope. Within operation and management of navigation locks, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.

B. Watertight gates close each end of the chamber and separate it from the higher and lower reaches. Valves open passages called culverts that admit or release water without lifting the boat mechanically. Gravity normally moves water from the higher level toward the lower one when operators adjust the valves. The chamber walls guide the changing surface while mooring lines keep a vessel from drifting dangerously. Observations of lock chambers, gates, and controlled water show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.

C. To travel upward, a boat enters from the lower reach after the chamber has been emptied to that level. The lower gates close, water enters gradually, and the boat rises with the surface. When chamber and upper reach are equal, the upper gates open and the vessel continues its journey. The downward process reverses the sequence, releasing water until the chamber matches the lower reach. Understanding operation and management of navigation locks therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.

D. Every cycle transfers water downhill, so busy or dry canals may use side ponds, pumps, or coordinated scheduling. Operators inspect gates and culverts because leakage slows operation and can damage surrounding structures. Signals and speed limits reduce collisions and harmful waves as vessels enter confined chambers. Locks work with reservoirs, channels, and weirs that maintain the navigable levels between one chamber and the next. For water use, safety, and larger canal systems, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Some canals use pumps or side ponds to manage water consumed by lock cycles.

  2. - 2. Gravity moves water through culverts when valves connect higher and lower levels.

  3. - 3. A navigation lock changes the water surrounding a boat instead of mechanically lifting the vessel.

  4. - 4. A boat travelling uphill enters after the chamber has reached the lower water level.

  5. - 5. Canal operators replace every lock gate after a fixed number of passages.

  6. - 6. Reservoirs and weirs help maintain the water levels between locks.

  7. - 7. Lines secure a boat while the surface rises or falls within the chamber.

  8. - 8. A series of chambers can carry a canal route across a large difference in elevation.

  9. - 9. Upper gates open only after water in the chamber matches the higher reach.
