Reading Test 18 · Part 3 (Rise of the Safety Bicycle)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. High-wheeled bicycles gave each pedal turn a long travel distance because the pedals were attached directly to the front wheel. Their elevated riders could see ahead, but a sudden stop might throw them forward from a dangerous height. The safety bicycle lowered the rider between two wheels of similar size and separated pedalling from the driven wheel. Its more stable layout became the foundation for the familiar diamond-framed bicycle used for ordinary travel. Together, these details place design and influence of the safety bicycle within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.

B. A chain carried motion from a large front sprocket at the pedals to a smaller sprocket on the rear wheel. Different sprocket sizes let designers obtain useful speed without requiring an enormous wheel beneath the rider. Steering remained at the front, while the rear wheel received power and the rider's weight stayed relatively low. Brakes and bearings varied among early models, but manufacturers steadily refined them as demand increased. This combination helps explain why equal wheels, chain drive, and steering cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.

C. Early solid tyres transmitted every roughness in the road to the frame and made long rides tiring. Air-filled tyres later softened impacts and reduced rolling resistance on uneven surfaces. Greater comfort and a more manageable riding position encouraged a broader range of people to use bicycles for work and recreation. Practical clothing and social customs also changed as riders sought freedom of movement beyond short local journeys. For design and influence of the safety bicycle, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

D. Standardized metal tubing and interchangeable components made bicycle production faster and repairs more predictable. Cyclists supported better road surfaces because mud, ruts, and loose stones limited safe travel. Skills in lightweight frames, chains, bearings, and tyres influenced other forms of manufacturing and transport. Modern bicycles vary greatly in material and purpose, yet most retain the safety bicycle's basic arrangement of two similar wheels. Viewed together, details about manufacturing, road advocacy, and continuing influence connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. A chain transferred pedalling force to the rear wheel.

  2. - 2. Pneumatic tyres made rough roads more comfortable for cyclists.

  3. - 3. Interchangeable parts simplified both bicycle production and later repair.

  4. - 4. Women purchased three quarters of the earliest safety bicycles.

  5. - 5. The safety bicycle placed its rider lower than the rider of a high-wheeled model.

  6. - 6. Cyclists promoted road improvements because poor surfaces restricted bicycle travel.

  7. - 7. Its general frame and wheel arrangement became the basis of the familiar modern bicycle.

  8. - 8. A safer position and smoother ride broadened the bicycle's appeal for daily travel and leisure.

  9. - 9. Using sprockets of different sizes produced speed without a very large wheel.
