Reading Test 41 · Part 3 (Stormwater Ponds in Developed Areas)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Rain reaches streams quickly after buildings and pavement replace soil and vegetation in a developing area. The sudden volume can erode channels and raise water levels downstream more rapidly than before. A stormwater pond receives runoff and stores part of it while the storm passes. Most ponds retain a permanent pool or dry between events according to their particular design. For the need to manage sudden runoff from developed land, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

B. An inlet carries water into a basin whose available space expands as the level rises. A restricted outlet releases water more slowly than it arrived, reducing the downstream peak flow. Emergency spillways provide a protected path when an unusually large event exceeds normal storage. Sloped banks and planted edges slow incoming water and reduce erosion around the pond perimeter. Together, these details place functions and maintenance of stormwater ponds within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.

C. Suspended soil settles when water remains in the basin and loses speed. Wetland vegetation can trap additional particles and provide cover for insects, birds, and amphibians. The pond is built for drainage performance, however, and its water level may change too often for some wildlife. Nutrients and pollutants carried by runoff can also reduce habitat quality if sources are not controlled. This combination helps explain why settling, vegetation, and habitat value cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.

D. Accumulated sediment eventually occupies storage space and must be measured and removed. Crews maintain outlets, remove invasive plants, and check banks for erosion or burrowing damage. Fences, signs, or gentle slopes may be used where public access creates safety concerns. A pond manages runoff from a limited catchment and cannot compensate for every drainage problem farther upstream. For functions and maintenance of stormwater ponds, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Removing accumulated sediment restores storage space that has been lost.

  2. - 2. Urban hard surfaces can increase both the speed and volume of runoff reaching streams.

  3. - 3. Sediment settles after entering the slower water inside a pond.

  4. - 4. A restricted outlet reduces the highest downstream flow by releasing stored water gradually.

  5. - 5. One pond cannot solve drainage problems beyond the catchment for which it was designed.

  6. - 6. Emergency spillways protect a route for water when normal storage is exceeded.

  7. - 7. Rainbow trout are stocked in every stormwater pond.

  8. - 8. A stormwater pond holds part of a storm's flow for later release.

  9. - 9. Changing pond levels may prevent some wildlife from using the habitat successfully.
