Reading Test 33 · Part 3 (The Chemistry of Soap)Pro

Read the following passage.

A. Soap forms when fats or oils react with a strong alkali under carefully controlled and consistently measured workshop conditions. This saponification reaction rearranges the starting materials into soap molecules and glycerol. Different plant oils and animal fats produce bars with varied hardness, lather, and cleaning properties. Accurate measurement matters because excess alkali can remain harsh, while too little may leave unreacted oil. For the chemical basis of soap production, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.

B. A maker dissolves the alkali safely, combines it with prepared oils, and mixes until the liquid begins to thicken. Fragrance, colour, or abrasive ingredients may be added after the main mixture reaches a stable stage. The fresh soap is poured into moulds, allowed to set, and cut when firm enough to handle. Many bars then cure for weeks while water evaporates and the internal structure becomes harder and milder. Together, these details place soap making and cleaning action within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.

C. One end of a soap molecule is attracted to water, while the other interacts more readily with oil and grease. During washing, soap molecules surround oily dirt and form tiny suspended clusters in the water. Rinsing carries those clusters away instead of allowing loosened grease to settle immediately onto the same surface. Mechanical rubbing assists by separating dirt and increasing contact among soap, water, and the material being cleaned. This combination helps explain why molecular action during washing cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.

D. Minerals in hard water can react with soap and produce a deposit that reduces visible lather. Builders or alternative cleansing agents may be included in formulations intended for difficult water conditions. Highly concentrated wash water should not enter natural waterways untreated because soap and removed dirt can affect aquatic systems. Good product design balances cleaning, skin contact, storage stability, packaging, and responsible disposal for the intended use. For soap making and cleaning action, relationships among these features matter because a change in one may influence several others within the same setting over time.

E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.

Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.

  1. - 1. Newly moulded bars often harden further as water leaves during a curing period.

  2. - 2. Soap results from a controlled reaction between fats or oils and a strong alkali.

  3. - 3. Hard-water minerals can form deposits that interfere with ordinary soap lather.

  4. - 4. Soap molecules suspend oily dirt because different ends interact with water and grease.

  5. - 5. Glycerol from each soap batch is donated to a hospital.

  6. - 6. Decorative or scented ingredients can be incorporated after the mixture begins to stabilize.

  7. - 7. Physical rubbing improves contact and helps separate dirt from a surface.

  8. - 8. Soap formulation must consider cleaning performance as well as disposal and storage.

  9. - 9. The kinds of oils used influence the hardness and lather of the finished soap.
