Read the following passage.
A. Paper marbling produces flowing bands and spots that resemble stone, water currents, or clouds. The decoration has long been used on book covers, endpapers, stationery, and other small crafted objects. Unlike painted repetition, each sheet records one temporary arrangement of colour floating on a liquid surface. A maker can guide the design, but small movements ensure that no two impressions are completely identical. Within traditional production of marbled paper, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.
B. A shallow tray holds water or a thickened liquid prepared so drops of colour remain near the surface. Pigments are mixed with a substance that helps them spread without immediately sinking or dissolving. The artist adds colours in sequence, allowing each new drop to push or occupy spaces among earlier ones. Surface tension, mixture strength, temperature, and cleanliness all influence the size and stability of the floating shapes. Observations of preparing a liquid surface and floating colour show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.
C. A stylus can draw through the colours, while a comb pulls many parallel points into repeating waves or feathers. Moving a tool too often mixes pigments and can turn a clear pattern into a muddy surface. When the arrangement is ready, treated paper is lowered carefully so it touches the colour without trapping large bubbles. The sheet lifts away with the pattern attached, leaving the tray ready to be cleaned or prepared again. Understanding traditional production of marbled paper therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.
D. The print dries flat before it is burnished, trimmed, bound into a book, or used as a separate artwork. Light, dampness, acidic paper, and unstable pigments can fade or stain older marbled sheets. Conservators avoid unnecessary washing because the colouring may respond differently from the paper beneath it. Contemporary makers combine traditional hand tools with new pigments while preserving the central idea of transferring a floating design. For variation, preservation, and modern use, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. The tray liquid is prepared so colour can remain floating near its surface.
- 2. Combs can pull several lines through floating pigment to create repeated featherlike forms.
- 3. Environmental exposure can discolour historical examples of marbled paper.
- 4. One museum owns the oldest precisely dated sheet of marbled paper.
- 5. Every marbled sheet captures a temporary colour arrangement and is therefore individually different.
- 6. Modern artists may adopt new pigments while retaining the floating-transfer process.
- 7. Bookbinding is one traditional use for decorated marbled paper.
- 8. The paper is placed onto the completed surface pattern to collect it.
- 9. The behaviour of colour drops changes with temperature and the strength of the mixture.
