Read the following passage.
A. Wetlands attract visitors but contain soft soils and vegetation that repeated footsteps can damage quickly. A conventional trail may sink, widen, or divert water as users search for a drier route. A raised boardwalk concentrates travel on a defined surface above much of the vulnerable ground. It provides access while reducing direct trampling, although construction itself still disturbs selected locations. Viewed together, details about the conflict between visitor access and sensitive ground connect visible characteristics with processes that are less immediately obvious to an ordinary observer at first.
B. Posts, helical anchors, or floating sections support decking according to soil depth and changing water levels. Builders minimize heavy equipment where it could compact soil or create deep ruts beside the route. Gaps between boards shed rain and allow light to reach part of the surface below. The structure must not form a solid barrier that blocks ordinary water movement across the wetland. Within design and maintenance of wetland boardwalks, the result is a system in which structure, timing, and local conditions remain closely connected throughout continuing development.
C. Routes avoid rare plant patches, nesting areas, unstable banks, and places where ice or floods concentrate force. Passing spaces and wider platforms reduce pressure at viewpoints where groups are likely to stop. Non-slip surfaces, edge guides, railings, and gentle slopes improve safety and access for varied users. Clear signs keep visitors on the structure and explain why stepping into apparently open ground can cause damage. Observations of route planning and visitor safety show why the same process may appear somewhat different from one site to another as surrounding conditions continue to change.
D. Inspectors replace loose boards, check supports, and remove debris that traps moisture against structural members. Seasonal movement can twist connections as saturated soil freezes, settles, or changes depth. If wildlife patterns or water channels shift, a section may need rerouting rather than repeated repair in place. A boardwalk reduces impact only when its location, visitor capacity, materials, and maintenance suit the wetland. Understanding design and maintenance of wetland boardwalks therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. Support systems vary according to soil conditions and changes in water depth.
- 2. A boardwalk prevents a wetland trail from spreading as visitors search for firm ground.
- 3. Freezing or settling wetland soil may distort boardwalk connections.
- 4. Designers steer boardwalks away from nesting areas and unstable edges.
- 5. Friends of Reed Marsh constructed the first wetland boardwalk in the region.
- 6. The structure must allow normal wetland water flow to continue across its route.
- 7. Wider stopping places can reduce crowding at popular viewpoints.
- 8. Environmental change can make relocation preferable to repairing one section repeatedly.
- 9. Construction offers access but still causes some disturbance at support locations.
