Read the following passage.
A. Community water use rises sharply at certain hours and falls during quiet periods of the day and night. Running large pumps only at the instant of demand would require equipment sized for brief peaks. A water tower stores treated water so pumping and consumption do not have to occur at identical rates. The elevated tank also converts the weight of stored water into useful pressure throughout the connected network. Understanding storage and pressure functions of water towers therefore requires attention to both immediate effects and slower forms of change within the whole connected system.
B. Pressure at a building depends mainly on the difference in height between the water surface and the outlet. A tower therefore raises the tank above most users rather than relying on the tank's shape to create pressure. Pipes connect the reservoir to distribution mains, allowing gravity to push water outward when valves are open. Sites at much higher ground may need separate pressure zones because one tower cannot serve every elevation equally. For elevated storage and gravity pressure, this wider context prevents one striking feature from being mistaken for the whole story during a quick first inspection.
C. During low demand, pumps refill the tank and restore the water level for the next busy period. When many taps open, stored water joins pump output and prevents a sudden pressure drop. The reserve can also support firefighting or short interruptions in electrical power and pumping. It is not unlimited, so operators monitor levels and protect water quality while the stored supply turns over. Together, these details place storage and pressure functions of water towers within a broader pattern shaped by the surrounding environment over a meaningful period of time.
D. Crews inspect coatings, ladders, valves, vents, and the tank interior to prevent corrosion or contamination. Towers are placed where height and pipe connections are useful, not simply at the geographic centre of a town. Some networks use ground reservoirs and variable-speed pumps instead of a prominent elevated tank. Where towers remain, their water level gives operators a direct indicator of the balance between supply and demand. This combination helps explain why inspection, placement, and changing network design cannot be understood from one feature alone or from one brief observation.
E. Not given in any of the above paragraphs.
Decide which paragraph, A to D, has the information given in each statement below. Select E if the information is not given in any of the paragraphs.
- 1. Pumps replenish a tower when consumption is relatively low.
- 2. Communities paint water towers different colours to indicate mineral content.
- 3. Stored water allows pumps to operate at a steadier rate than community demand.
- 4. Maintenance includes protecting interior surfaces and openings from contamination.
- 5. The vertical difference between tank and user matters more to pressure than tank shape.
- 6. Raising water also provides pressure to the distribution system.
- 7. The tank can supply additional water during peak use or a temporary power loss.
- 8. Neighbourhoods at very different heights may require separate pressure arrangements.
- 9. A tower's current level shows whether water supply is keeping pace with demand.
