Families Reconsider Continuous Tracking of Teenagers’ Phones
A recent review in Silver Birch has raised the possibility of event-based location sharing for teenagers. Silver Birch Family Technology Forum began the review because of youth reports that permanent tracking reduced honest discussion without teaching safer decisions. Those most directly involved are teenagers, parents and guardians, family counsellors, and digital-safety educators.
The principal reservation comes from Gordon Ip, a parent of two teenagers, whose position is that continuous access can be a quiet safety tool that does not require frequent messages. Ip doubts the proposal for a practical reason: a teenager who loses a phone connection or becomes delayed may be unable to initiate event-based sharing. Ip therefore warns that removing the tool could lead parents to call more often and create greater interruption. Ip proposes keeping continuous tracking but agreeing that parents view it only after a missed check-in as a less risky response.
For Leila Anders, a sixteen-year-old digital-safety peer educator, the debate overlooks the fact that a rule limiting access matters only if teenagers can tell when their location has been viewed. Anders considers this essential because invisible checks leave young people unable to know whether an agreement is being honoured. “Trust cannot depend on information that only one side can see,” Anders says; the recommended response is using visible viewing histories and revisiting permissions every three months because access logs and regular review could make either tracking model more accountable.
Another voice in favour belongs to Shirin Wallace, a family mediator, because specific sharing agreements can provide reassurance without turning ordinary movement into constant supervision. That support reflects Wallace's belief that teenagers learn responsibility when they know why a check-in is expected and what follows if it is missed. Wallace says that families could focus on unusual situations rather than interpreting every pause or detour. For Wallace, implementation must ensure that parents do not reactivate continuous tracking after minor mistakes without a new discussion.
The final proposal comes from Roshan Meier, the forum’s digital-wellness coordinator: a family agreement toolkit offering event-based sharing and limited emergency-access models. The forum would then survey check-in reliability, perceived trust, parent interruptions, and disputes about location access. Wallace prefers event-based sharing, while Ip says the emergency model must remain simple to activate. Teen and parent groups will test the wording before the toolkit is distributed publicly.
